ALTER TO BACCHUS

The town name likely derives from “alter to Bacchus,” the roman god of the grape harvest, wine making and wine, ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy. Sounds like a fun place. We found Bacharach to be a half-timbered village on the Rhine river. We stayed at the historic Hotel Kranenturm with it’s castle ambience. The hotel was part of the medieval town wall but it was 15 feet from the train tracks.
